I do not know how many times I have heard “The Bible is not a science book!” Well, I must say for a book that is not a science book, the Bible has some pretty good science. As a Bible believer, there is one thing that I would agree with any scientist on, whether they are a scientist like John C. Sanford that believes in Biblical creation, or they are an ardent atheist like Richard Dawkins. Life on this planet as we know it is not going to continue indefinitely. Some scientists talk of an asteroid hitting the earth and wiping us out. Some believe an asteroid led to the demise of the dinosaurs. Some scientists talk of a solar flare hitting the earth at some point. If those do not happen, sometime in the future the earth will be destroyed when the sun goes nova. Eventually, the entire universe will suffer a heat death due to the second law of thermodynamics. A threat that I do not hear a lot about that is much more eminent is the loss of the earth’s magnetic field that protects us from solar radiation. John C. Sanford predicts that our genome deterioration will cause us to go extinct in about 300 generations.1 What we actually observe from the deterioration of the human genome caused by the accumulation of genetic mutations is very consistent with the Biblical account of the curse and very inconsistent with the General Theory of Evolution.2 We see a host of genetic diseases and disorders caused by genetic mutations.3 Of course, The Revelation of Jesus Christ and other books in the Bible teach us that God will step in before human kind goes extinct.
I was doing my daily Bible reading for October 30. Psalm 102: 25-27 states “Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth and made the heavens with your hands. They will perish, but you remain forever; they will wear out like old clothing. You will change them like a garment and discard them. But you are always the same; you will live forever.”4 So 3,000 years ago, the Bible was talking about how the second law of thermodynamics applies to the earth and the universe – long before Isaac Asimov wrote The Last Question in 1956.5 Just to put extra emphasis on the significance of those verses from Psalm 102, about 2,000 years ago the writer of Hebrews quoted that Psalm.6
To even do science, one must trust in the uniformity of the laws governing the universe. If you do an experiment today, then repeat the same experiment tomorrow under the same conditions, you will get the same result. Gravity must work the same today as it worked yesterday. And it must work the same way tomorrow.
In Job 38:33, God asks Job “Do you know the laws of the universe? Can you use them to regulate the earth?”7 Job was written thousands of years ago. Jeremiah 33:25 states “But this is what the LORD says: I would no more reject my people than I would change my laws that govern night and day, earth and sky.”8 So the Bible tells me that the universe is governed by laws and these laws regulate the earth. The Bible also tells me that God will not change these laws. So as a Bible believing Christian, I have a basis for knowing that we can do science. What is Richard Dawkins basis for science?
