In my e-mailings, I receive Que Pasa, a newsletter from the San Antonio Baptist Association. In their June 11 e-mailing, they had a segment on an article “The 2019 Most Post-Christian Cities in America.”1 Instead of just asking people how they identified themselves, Barna researchers looked at certain criteria; basically how people actually live their lives. I think it is notable that Springfield-Holyoke, MA was rated number 1, given that Massachusetts was founded “for the glory of God, and advancement…..
In his 2014 article “Why Stop at Refusing to Bake a Cake for a Same-Sex Marriage,” Bernard Goldberg (a political pundit seen as conservative and actually opposed President Obama) sees the issue of a business owner who does not want to cater same sex “weddings” as a civil rights issue.1 He states: “But when laws are based on deeply held religious beliefs, I get nervous.” He compares this to people using their religious beliefs to justify segregation and laws against…..
The first President Bush talked about making American families “a lot more like The Waltons and a lot less like The Simpsons.”1 While I understand what President Bush was trying to say, and I agree with his point, the truth is I have a problem watching either show. While I was growing up, I watched The Waltons with my family. That was Thursday night. We were almost through the week. The Waltons was based on the actual family and growing…..
I have mixed feelings about a story in the news recently. Nevest Coleman recently got his job back as a grounds keeper with the Chicago White Sox after being wrongly imprisoned for 23 years for a rape and murder conviction.1 While I am very happy for Coleman that he was exonerated by DNA evidence; and I am happy he has back the job he loves and is getting on with his life; I am very angry that he was convicted…..
Here we go again. Evangelical church leaders just put out a statement on the biblical view of marriage and sexuality called the Nashville Statement.1 Interestingly enough; I agree 100% with everything in the statement. But church leadership is still not getting it! You cannot expect people (even professing Christians) to have biblical values if they do not believe the Bible. And if they do not believe the Bible starting with Genesis, they do not believe the Bible. I teach people…..
Last week, The Daily Mail had an article headlined: “Bronze Age DNA disproves the Bible’s claim that the Canaanites were wiped out: Study says their genes live on in modern-day Lebanese people”1 The article mentions Deuteronomy where the Israelites are commanded to destroy the Canaanites. But this is a straw man argument. Joshua states 13:13 “But the Israelites failed to drive out the people of Geshur and Maacah, so they continue to live among the Israelites to this day.”2 Joshua…..
This past week I was struck by two news stories. The first one was Rachel Dolezal being disinvited from a Baltimore book festival.1 She was the person forced to resign as President of the NAACP because it was discovered she was not “black.” The second news story was a federal appeals court ruling that a 17 year old Wisconsin high school student, Ashton Whitaker, who is female, may use the boy’s room.2 Writing about the school’s policy, U.S. Circuit Judge…..
The January 2017 issue of National Geographic features what is truly a very sad situation. Avery Jackson is featured as a 9 year old “transgender girl.”1 This is extremely sad on several accounts. First it is very sad that a young boy (That is right, I said boy.) would be so confused. What is even sadder is the state of our society, exemplified by National Geographic. Because of political correctness, and denial that there is truth, young Avery is not…..
I think most of us are familiar with the “There’s good news and bad news.” That is what I was thinking when I was looking at the stories on Bing on Thursday. I will start out with the bad news. The bad news is Vermont’s woman’s basketball team cancelled a scheduled game against the University of North Carolina.1 They canceled it is because North Carolina has enough sense to know that men should use men’s restrooms and locker rooms and…..
Do you ever get angry when you are proved right? I do. Our pastor at my church has started a Sunday evening series called Why I Believe. It addresses the questions: Can I trust the Bible? How do I know that Christianity is true? In our last class on January 17, 2016, we discussed a number of evidences as to why we can believe the Bible from a scientific perspective, including evidence for Noah’s flood. We really had a good…..
