On August 28, 2015, a Harris County Deputy Sheriff was shot multiple times in the back. The “Black Lives Matter” campaign is being blamed for much of the recent violence against police.1 From what I have been able to ascertain, the accused murderer, Shannon J. Miles, a 30-year old man, lived at home with his mother.2 Evidently his father was not a part of the picture.
Once again, I can see how our problems as a society would mostly go away if people would just read, believe and follow the Bible. Genesis is not just allegory. Genesis is history! It is vital that we understand this. As I discussed in my blog “Ferguson from a Biblical Perspective,”3 Genesis teaches that we are all descendents of Noah and his wife. So we are all a part of the same human family and there is only one race – the human race!
The Bible also teaches us the importance of a husband staying with his family. Malachi 2:15 states one reason for a man staying with his wife – “And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth.”4 Chapter 13 of Paul’s letter to the Romans teaches us that we need to respect those in authority – “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities.”5
So think of all of these problems that would be solved if we would all just accept the Bible. But we live in a society where even the church is rejecting the truth of the Bible. The Constitution ends with “done in Convention by the Unanimous Consent of the States present the Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven …” This is obviously a reference to Jesus of Nazareth, recognizing Jesus as Lord. In Matthew 19:4 this same Jesus quotes Genesis – “Haven’t you read the Scriptures?” Jesus replied. “They record that from the beginning ‘God made them male and female.’”7 I believe Justice Kennedy missed this when he wrote the majority opinion in Obergefell v. Hodges which says that a “marriage” can be two dudes or two gals. Modern science is just now figuring out what David told us 3, 000 years ago in Psalm 139: 13-15 – “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.”8 Harry Blackmun missed this when he wrote the majority opinion in Roe v. Wade which created a holocaust in the country that to date has killed approximately 58 million unborn babies.
So what are the consequences of us rejecting the truth of God’s word – that is beside strife between groups of people, attacks on law enforcement, fatherless children growing up and doing terrible things, a desecration of the institution of marriage, and a holocaust that dwarfs what happened in Nazi controlled Europe where 10 million people were murdered? Recently, stock market averages have been going down significantly because of news of what is happening is Asia.9 I certainly hope for my sake and a lot of other people that the stock market will recover. And it probably will. But why should our stock market be so affected by what happens in Asia? Could it be because we owe Asian counties so much money? We owe $1.3 trillion to China, $1.2 trillion to Japan – $5.1 trillion to foreign countries overall. In Deuteronomy 28:12 God promised the nation of Israel that if they obey His commandments “You will lend to many nations, but you will never need to borrow from them.” But in Deuteronomy 28:43-44 God warned the nation of Israel that if they do not obey His commandments “The foreigners living among you will become stronger and stronger, while you become weaker and weaker. They will lend money to you, but you will not lend to them. They will be the head, and you will be the tail!”11 So like the nation of Israel, we can choose to keep turning away from God and His word. And like the nation of Israel, we can continue to suffer the consequences. God is merciful and he gave Israel many chances. But eventually, Israel became a divided kingdom. Then the northern kingdom, called Israel, was carried was carried away by the Assyrians and the southern kingdom, called Judah, was carried away by the Babylonians. How long will God put up with our rebellion?
