On February 23, I attended the documentary Is Genesis History? After the movie, for those interested, I handed out pamphlets with information about the San Antonio Bible Based Science Association.1 I handed out all of the pamphlets that I had. For those of you that have not seen it or heard about it, this movie supports the biblical creation account and Noah’s flood from a scientific perspective. It looks at biology, geology, astronomy, the fossil evidence, language, and the ancient Hebrew text. This was a movie the makers – Creation Ministries International – had to almost pay the theaters to show. They got theaters to show it for one night. And guess what? Theaters were filled and people were even turned away. It was the number 1 viewed movie for that date.2 Because of the response, theater management decided to have two special encore presentations.
The point of this is theater management had to learn the same thing that church leadership still has not learned. People want to see this! They want to know if you can believe the Bible as it reads – starting with Genesis. They are hungry for this information. I have talked to other people involved in the biblical creation ministry. They all have the same problem – church leadership! Church leadership just wants to avoid this topic and tell people just to believe in Jesus. Of course what is being missed is that the opening verses of Genesis are about Jesus! Talking about Jesus, the Gospel According to John tells us:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”3
Paul’s Letter to the Colossians states in the first chapter:
“For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him: And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist.”4
My favorite king in the Bible is King Josiah. II Kings Chapter 22 gives the account of when they found the Book of the Law during his reign:
Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the court secretary, “I have found the Book of the Law in the Lord’s Temple!” Then Hilkiah gave the scroll to Shaphan, and he read it. Shaphan went to the king and reported, “Your officials have turned over the money collected at the Temple of the Lord to the workers and supervisors at the Temple.” Shaphan also told the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a scroll.” So Shaphan read it to the king. When the king heard what was written in the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes in despair. Then he gave these orders to Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Acbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the court secretary, and Asaiah the king’s personal adviser: “Go to the Temple and speak to the Lord for me and for the people and for all Judah. Inquire about the words written in this scroll that has been found. For the Lord’s great anger is burning against us because our ancestors have not obeyed the words in this scroll. We have not been doing everything it says we must do.”5
Now what was this Book of the Law? Well, it certainly was not what we call the New Testament. It was written long before that. It would not even include books like Ezekiel and Daniel or any of the post captivity prophets. Those books were written later. What is being referred to are the first books of the Bible – to include Genesis! This was the book that they had actually forgotten about. And this is the book that church leadership today is saying is not really important. But this is the book being attacked by the secular world. This is why we have lost people. People understand that if you cannot believe Genesis, you cannot believe the Bible. Is your church teaching you how you can defend your faith in the Bible, starting with Genesis? If not, ask them: Why not? And refer them to the nearest biblical creation organization.
