The Charlie Gard case shows how hypocritical “pro-choice” people are.1 They believe parents should have the right to kill their baby for any reason and under any circumstances. But they do not believe parents have the right to try to save their baby. To understand this, we have to look at another Charlie – Charles Darwin.
In his Descent of Man, Charles Darwin stated: “With savages, the weak in body or mind are soon eliminated; and those that survive commonly exhibit a vigorous state of health. We civilised men, on the other hand, do our utmost to check the process of elimination; we build asylums for the imbecile, the maimed, and the sick; we institute poor-laws; and our medical men exert their utmost skill to save the life of every one to the last moment.”2
Inspired by Darwin, his cousin Francis Galton coined the term “eugenics.”3 Eugenicist Madison Grant wrote the book Passing of the Great Race, which Adolph Hitler called “his Bible.”4 Eugenicists Harry Hamilton Laughlin drafted Virginia’s Racial Integrity Act in 1924 under which Carrie Buck was involuntarily sterilized.5 Supreme Court Justice Holmes who wrote the Buck v. Bell decision, also wrote: “I see no reason for attributing to man a significance different in kind from that which belongs to a baboon or a grain of sand,”6 Eugenicists Joseph Spence DeJarnette, who testified for the Virginia law in Buck v. Bell, stated in 1934, “The Germans are beating us at our own game.”7 And of course we have Planned Parenthood Founder, eugenicist Margaret Sanger.8
And finally we have Leonard Darwin, son of Charles Darwin, who became President of the First International Congress of Eugenics in 1912. Succeeding his cousin, Francis Galton, Leonard Darwin was also Chairman of the British Eugenics Society (now known as the Galton institute) from 1911-1928 and Honorary President from 1928 until his death in 1943.9 The Galton Institute Conference in 2011 was “Human and Primate Evolution.”10 So it all goes back to Charlie Darwin. Psalm 12:7-8 reminds us: Therefore, Lord, we know you will protect the oppressed, preserving them forever from this lying generation, even though the wicked strut about, and evil is praised throughout the land. 11
