Quite often, I see events going on and I think of what I have read in the Bible. As I said in my opening blog, it is when you look at the world with a biblical perspective that things start to make sense. But the other night, as I was doing my daily reading, I had just the reverse experience. Reading the Bible made me think of what is going on.
I sometimes say that the best thing about democracy is everyone gets a vote. But the worst thing about democracy is everyone gets a vote. If you have ever watched “JayWalking” with Jay Leno, you know what I am talking about. Jay Leno would ask people “What country did we fight during the Revolutionary War?”, “In what month do we vote for president?”, “When was the Declaration of Independence adopted?”, “How many stars are on the flag?” People would not know the answers to the questions. Jimmy Kimmel has the segment “Lie Witness News.” That really reveals how people are either dishonest or delusional. But could they be afraid to admit they really do not know what is going on? By the way, I am not a Jimmy Kimmel viewer, but heard one of those segments on Michael Medved.
But I think I can understand why people do not know things that they should know. Reading a particular verse last night, I thought of some of the television programs that I have seen promos for such as Temptation Island, and Naked and Afraid. These are just two of the raunchier ones. I would not consider most reality television programs worth my time to watch. But there have been plenty of other programs over the years that are plenty mindless, such as Jerry Springer.
I am not saying I spend every minute of every day doing something constructive. And while I do not spend a lot of time watching television, I will spend some time watching Hi Chaparral reruns. But I do prefer to watch programs of a documentary type, such as Mysteries at the Museum on The Travel Channel. I enjoy historical documentaries and am looking forward to seeing Texas Rising on The History Channel. Two programs I make a point to watch are Kennedy Classics with the late D. James Kennedy and Faith in History with William Federer. And of course I spend a lot of time studying the issue of Biblical Creation verses materialistic philosophy. I will say that I cannot stand to watch movies about the Bible. I have a one year Bible that I read daily. So I know when the script deviates from the Bible and it is too frustrating for me to watch. So I recommend people read the Bible for themselves.
Now what was the verse that inspired me to write this blog?
“A wise person is hungry for knowledge, while the fool feeds on trash.” Proverbs 15:24 NLT
So in trying to understand some of the problems we are having as a society, I think we should take note of what we and other people are feeding on.
